The Solano County Historical Society opened the museum in 1984, and it features a range of changing exhibits throughout the year. Women I Have Encountered, a previous show, explored the role of powerful women in social justice throughout the region's history. The Nut Tree Plaza began as a roadside fruit store near Interstate 80 in Vacaville in 1921, and has since grown to become one of the region's largest entertainment complexes, with a restaurant, bakery, toy shop, airport, and miniature railroad. Despite closing between 1996 and 2009, the complex has just reopened as a restored master-planned development with almost 400,000 square feet of retail space, apartment and office units, a public event center, and a two-acre children's amusement area.
Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th, Old Navy, and Michael's are among the anchor retailers, and there are more than 25 food options, including national brand favorites like Buffalo Wild Wings, Chipotle, and Starbucks Coffee. The famous Nut Tree Railroad Engine #5, a delightful children's carousel, and larger-than-life checkers and chess games for family play are among the children's rides.
